OpenAI faces scrutiny as Dutch Privacy Watchdog seeks answers

DPA, the Dutch privacy watchdog, said it is “concerned” about the use of personal data by software developers working on artificial intelligence (AI), and it has sent a letter to Microsoft-backed OpenAI requesting more information.

After OpenAI’s ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, governments, including the European Union, are debating how to regulate the technology.

“The DPA is concerned about how organizations that use ‘generative’ artificial intelligence treat personal information,” the agency stated.

The agency “will take a variety of actions in the future.” As a first step, we have written to OpenAI to clarify some points about ChatGPT.”

DPA stated that it was looking for information on how the company gathered the data it used to create its software and how it stores data, including information gleaned from user questions.

Concerns are growing about the technology’s potential abuse and the possibility that bad actors and governments will use it to spread far more misinformation than previously.
